Tesla's going all-in on building cars in tents with GA 4.5.

Way back during the ramp-up phase of the Tesla Model 3 (aka "Production Hell"), the Big T thought the best way to get production numbers up would be to build a big ol' tent at its Fremont factory and produce vehicles in there. That tent was called GA 4. We made jokes about it, understandably, but for its part, Tesla has continued with the whole tent thing as a solution for space constraints at Fremont.

That brings us to a report published on Friday by Teslarati that Tesla is making a new tent, known officially as GA 4.5, permanent. Not permanent like it'll get turned into a building, but permanent in that it will continue to be used to build cars indefinitely and will have utilities installed in the ground there.

Of course, it's easy to poke fun at Tesla for building cars in a tent if recent recalls and warnings from the Chinese government, as well as low scores in JD Power's dependability study show, make you question its build quality.

We'd ask Tesla for comment on its big tent news, but it no longer has a PR department. So, instead, we'll write our questions down on slips of paper, fold them into origami cranes and let them go into the wind. We'll let you know if we hear back.

Correction, 5:17 p.m.: Clarified that the story refers to a new tent.
